Packaging that keeps up with the line

Manufacturing Packaging

A production line only makes money while it’s moving, and packaging is the last thing that touches everything you make. When it’s late, dispatch stops. When it’s wrong, your product wears the damage. When it’s overbuilt, every shipment pays freight on material the product didn’t need.
CMTP supplies Australian manufacturers with pallets, crates, cases and cartons designed around the product and delivered on schedule, from eleven manufacturing sites of our own. We run production lines too, so we know exactly what an idle one costs.

Floating Background

Fifty years of industrial packaging, made in Australia

CMTP has been making industrial packaging since 1976, when the business started in a workshop in Colac, Victoria. It is still family owned and still run by the family that started it. Fifty years on, around 250 people across eleven manufacturing sites in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania build pallets, wooden shipping crates, cartons and bins for Australian manufacturers.

Plenty of manufacturing packaging is bought in and marked up, which means the lead time you are quoted is really someone else’s. The team makes what you order, on our own equipment, at the site closest to your dock. Short freight leg, realistic delivery window, and one supplier holding one specification across every site you run.

Industrial packaging supplies come from the one place, so dispatch is not juggling five suppliers to get a shipment out the door: pallets, industrial crates, export crates, cartons, bulk bins and corrosion protection. Design and engineering sits in house, so we measure the product on site, design around it and prototype before a production run. Behind that, ISO 9001 at Colac and Dandenong, ISPM 15 on export lanes, HACCP certified pallets for food lines, and a 95 per cent DIFOT target.

The problems

what goes wrong with manufacturing packaging

Supply gaps that stop dispatch

Finished goods with nothing to ship on aren’t finished, they’re inventory. A missed packaging delivery backs up dispatch, then the line, then the delivery promises you’ve made to your own customers. The packaging is the cheapest thing in the chain right up until it’s the reason everything stopped.

Freight cost creep

Packaging that’s the wrong size or heavier than the job needs charges you twice: once when you buy it, and again on every freight invoice, because carriers bill for the air and timber around your product as happily as the product itself. A few wasted centimetres per unit compounds across a year of shipments into serious money.

Suppliers who sell, but don’t design

Plenty of suppliers will sell you a standard pallet off the rack. Far fewer will look at your product, your line and your freight lane and design what those actually need. Off-the-shelf packaging forced onto a specific product is where transit damage, wasted cube and workaround handling all start.

The solution

How CMTP solves them

Scheduled supply the line can trust

Regular manufacturers run on scheduled deliveries matched to production, just-in-time style, so packaging lands as it’s consumed instead of piling up or running out. Every order carries a confirmed delivery date, tracked against our 95 per cent DIFOT target, and being made at the nearest of eleven sites keeps the freight leg short.

Design that pays for itself

Right-sized packaging is a freight decision as much as a protection one. Our design and engineering team sizes packaging to the product and the container, not to the nearest stock size. One defence manufacturer cut shipping costs by more than a third after our packaging redesign, and that money came straight off invoices they were already paying.

Measured, prototyped, then made

We measure up on site, design around your product, and build an off-tool prototype before anything goes to a production run. Timber, plywood, cardboard, Flute Board, foam, steel or a combination, whatever the product actually needs.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you supply packaging on a schedule to match our production?

Yes. Regular manufacturers set up scheduled deliveries matched to their production rhythm, just-in-time style, so packaging arrives as it’s consumed. It’s how you stop packaging becoming either a floor-space problem or a supply gap.

Do you design packaging or just sell it?

Both, and the design is the point. We measure your product, design packaging around it, and build an off-tool prototype before production. If you’ve only ever bought off the rack, the difference shows up in transit damage and freight cost within the first few shipments.

How much does badly sized packaging actually cost?

More than the packaging. Carriers charge for volume and weight, so every oversized crate pays freight on empty space, shipment after shipment. One defence manufacturer cut shipping costs by more than a third after a packaging redesign. The packaging itself was the smallest part of that equation.

What packaging do manufacturers typically need?

Most manufacturing dispatch runs on four things: pallets sized to the product and racking, crates or cases for goods that need structure around them, cartons for everything conveyable, and dunnage to stop movement inside. The right mix depends on the product, which is what a measure-up is for.

Can you handle export requirements?

Yes. Export packaging is ISPM 15 compliant and individually stamped, and metal goods get corrosion protection matched to the journey: VCI bags, foil barriers and inhibitor systems for sea freight.

What information do you need for a quote?

The exact dimensions of goods (L x W x H), the weight, whether it’s for domestic or export use, delivery location, and for scheduled supply, your rough weekly or monthly volumes.
