Mining & Resources Packaging
In the city, a wrong delivery is an inconvenience. Twelve hundred kilometres up the track, it’s a week of downtime and a freight bill that makes the packaging look free. Mining doesn’t forgive packaging mistakes, so the trick is not making them.
CMTP builds heavy-duty pallets, engineered crates and corrosion protection for the resources sector: parts and consumables heading to site, high-value spares going into storage, and equipment moving between operations. Eleven manufacturing sites plus partner alliances in Perth and Darwin keep the supply line short, even when the site isn’t.
Heavy duty pallets and crates, built in Australia since 1976
CMTP started in a workshop in Colac, Victoria in 1976. It is still family owned and still run by the family that started it. Around 250 people now work across eleven manufacturing sites in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, with partner alliances in Perth and Darwin covering the west and the north.
Distance is what makes mining logistics different from everything else. A crate that fails in a metro warehouse is an annoyance. The same crate failing at a remote site isn’t an annoyance, it’s downtime, and the replacement is a week away at best. So two things matter: whether the packaging is built strong enough for the trip, and whether it turns up when it is meant to. Because we manufacture rather than resell, both of those are ours to answer for, and ISO 9001 quality management at Colac and Dandenong is what keeps a specification identical whichever site builds it.
We build heavy duty pallets, heavy duty crates for mining equipment transport, equipment transport cases and crane pallets, plus corrosion protection for spares sitting in a site container. Heavy duty pallets can be NATA lab tested, so you get a certified safe working load rather than an assurance. Design and engineering sits in house, which means equipment is measured, designed around and prototyped before a production run. Getting mining supplies and site packaging from the one place also means one purchase order and one delivery date, tracked against a 95 per cent DIFOT target.
What goes wrong with mining packaging
Remote operations run on freight windows. Miss one because packaging arrived late, wrong or broken, and the reorder isn’t a phone call, it’s next week’s truck. Every packaging failure gets multiplied by the distance it has to travel twice.
Critical spares are insurance, and unprotected steel in a site container is insurance that expires. Heat, dust and coastal air work on metal all year round, and the corrosion is only discovered at the worst possible moment: when the spare is finally needed.
Machinery goes to site, comes back for rebuilds, and moves between operations for its whole working life. Every one of those moves without proper crating is a gamble with equipment worth more than a year of packaging budget.
How CMTP solves them
Packaging is manufactured at the nearest of eleven sites, with partner alliances in Perth and Darwin covering the west and north. Every order carries a confirmed delivery date, tracked against our 95 per cent DIFOT target, and gets quoted with the delivery so there are no surprises at the freight end.
VCI bags, foil barriers and corrosion inhibitor systems matched to how long the spare will sit and where. Packed properly going in, a spare comes out of a five-year storage stint ready to fit, not ready to scrap.
Our machinery packing teams measure up on site, build crates engineered for the load, and pack where the equipment sits. Short or long term storage is there when the site isn’t ready to receive, and the same team crates the rebuild trip home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make heavy-duty pallets for mining equipment?
Yes. CMTP builds heavy-duty mining pallets to the actual load, not picked from a standard range. Tell us the weight, how it’s being lifted (forklift, crane or slings) and the conditions it’s going into, and the team designs the pallet to match. Load-tested crane pallets are available for the heaviest gear.
How do you stop mining spares corroding in long-term storage?
We match the protection to how long the spare will sit and where. Metal parts are sealed in VCI (vapour corrosion inhibitor) bags or foil barriers, inhibitors go inside the packaging, and the crate is built to keep that seal intact until the part is needed. A spare that sits in a store for years should come out ready to fit, not rusted.
Can you crate mining machinery for transport between sites?
Yes. Our machinery packing team measures the equipment where it sits, builds the crate at the nearest CMTP site, and packs it on location. If the receiving site isn’t ready, we can store the crated equipment until it is.
Do you deliver pallets and crates to remote mine sites?
Yes. CMTP delivers across Australia from 11 manufacturing sites, with partner alliances in Perth and Darwin, using our own fleet and trusted freight partners. Every quote includes delivery and a confirmed date, so you can plan around it. When a reorder takes a week to reach site, getting it right the first time matters.
What do you need to quote mining packaging?
The exact dimensions (length, width, height), the weight, whether it’s for domestic or export use, and the delivery location. For storage jobs, tell us how long the packaging needs to protect the part. Drawings or photos help with odd shapes.
Can you pack mining equipment for export?
Yes. CMTP’s pallets and crates are ISPM 15 certified, heat-treated and stamped to clear biosecurity at the border. That means your equipment and spares won’t be held up or rejected overseas because of the packaging. For sea freight, we can add corrosion protection to deal with salt air and condensation.
Can your heavy-duty pallets be tested for a safe working load?
Yes. Heavy-duty pallets can be tested by a NATA-accredited laboratory for a certified safe working load. For mine sites with strict lifting procedures, that gives you a documented rating instead of a best guess.
Can your team pack equipment at our site or laydown area?
Yes. CMTP’s contract packaging teams can come to your workshop or laydown area and pack on site, so heavy or awkward equipment doesn’t have to be moved twice. You get the crate and the crew from one supplier.
Do you supply bulk bins for mining parts and components?
Yes. CMTP supplies flat-pack composite bulk bins for parts, fittings and components. They’re stored flat until you need them, then go together quickly to keep the store or workshop organised.
Can you build crates for rebuilt components going back to site?
Yes. Rebuilt motors, gearboxes and other major components go back to site in a crate built around them, with blocking and bracing to stop them moving, and corrosion protection if they’ll be stored before fitting. A rebuild shouldn’t be damaged on its last trip.
Is there a minimum order?
Yes. CMTP is set up for mining and resources companies that order packaging in volume or need heavy-duty, engineered crating. If you’re not sure whether your job fits, call the team on 1300 531 536 and we’ll tell you straight up.
