Mining & Resources Packaging
In the city, a wrong delivery is an inconvenience. Twelve hundred kilometres up the track, it’s a week of downtime and a freight bill that makes the packaging look free. Mining doesn’t forgive packaging mistakes, so the trick is not making them.
CMTP builds heavy-duty pallets, engineered crates and corrosion protection for the resources sector: parts and consumables heading to site, high-value spares going into storage, and equipment moving between operations. Eleven manufacturing sites plus partner alliances in Perth and Darwin keep the supply line short, even when the site isn’t.
Heavy duty pallets and crates, built in Australia since 1976
CMTP started in a workshop in Colac, Victoria in 1976. It is still family owned and still run by the family that started it. Around 250 people now work across eleven manufacturing sites in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, with partner alliances in Perth and Darwin covering the west and the north.
Distance is what makes mining logistics different from everything else. A crate that fails in a metro warehouse is an annoyance. The same crate failing at a remote site isn’t an annoyance, it’s downtime, and the replacement is a week away at best. So two things matter: whether the packaging is built strong enough for the trip, and whether it turns up when it is meant to. Because we manufacture rather than resell, both of those are ours to answer for, and ISO 9001 quality management at Colac and Dandenong is what keeps a specification identical whichever site builds it.
We build heavy duty pallets, heavy duty crates for mining equipment transport, equipment transport cases and crane pallets, plus corrosion protection for spares sitting in a site container. Heavy duty pallets can be NATA lab tested, so you get a certified safe working load rather than an assurance. Design and engineering sits in house, which means equipment is measured, designed around and prototyped before a production run. Getting mining supplies and site packaging from the one place also means one purchase order and one delivery date, tracked against a 95 per cent DIFOT target.
what goes wrong with mining packaging
Remote operations run on freight windows. Miss one because packaging arrived late, wrong or broken, and the reorder isn’t a phone call, it’s next week’s truck. Every packaging failure gets multiplied by the distance it has to travel twice.
Critical spares are insurance, and unprotected steel in a site container is insurance that expires. Heat, dust and coastal air work on metal all year round, and the corrosion is only discovered at the worst possible moment: when the spare is finally needed.
Machinery goes to site, comes back for rebuilds, and moves between operations for its whole working life. Every one of those moves without proper crating is a gamble with equipment worth more than a year of packaging budget.
How CMTP solves them
Packaging is manufactured at the nearest of eleven sites, with partner alliances in Perth and Darwin covering the west and north. Every order carries a confirmed delivery date, tracked against our 95 per cent DIFOT target, and gets quoted with the delivery so there are no surprises at the freight end.
VCI bags, foil barriers and corrosion inhibitor systems matched to how long the spare will sit and where. Packed properly going in, a spare comes out of a five-year storage stint ready to fit, not ready to scrap.
Our machinery packing teams measure up on site, build crates engineered for the load, and pack where the equipment sits. Short or long term storage is there when the site isn’t ready to receive, and the same team crates the rebuild trip home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make heavy-duty pallets?
Yes. Pallets built to your actual load, not a catalogue number, including crane pallets that are load-tested and designed for crane lifting. Tell us the weight, the handling and the conditions and we build for that.
How do you protect spares in long-term storage?
With a corrosion protection system matched to the storage duration and environment: VCI bags and foil barriers around the metal, corrosion inhibitor systems inside the packaging, and crating that keeps the protection intact until the spare is needed.
Can you crate machinery for site moves?
Yes. Our machinery packing teams measure up where the equipment sits, build engineered crates at the nearest CMTP facility, and pack on site. Storage is available when the receiving end isn’t ready.
Do you deliver to remote sites?
We deliver Australia-wide from eleven manufacturing sites, with partner alliances in Perth and Darwin, using our own fleet and trusted freight partners. Every quote includes the delivery and a confirmed date, so your freight window is planned, not hoped for.
What information do you need for a quote?
The exact dimensions of goods (L x W x H), the weight, whether it’s for domestic or export use, the delivery location, and for storage jobs, how long the packaging needs to protect for.
