CMTP Colac

CMTP started in Colac in 1976, when Chris and Marilyn Meade opened the original site. Fifty years on, it’s still our head office and one of our largest manufacturing facilities.

What We Manufacture

Made in Colac, Shipped Across Australia

Colac is where CMTP started. Chris and Marilyn Meade opened the original site in 1976, and 50 years later it’s still our head office and one of our largest manufacturing facilities. From here the team covers western Victoria, the Surf Coast, the Great Ocean Road corridor, the Otways and across to the South Australian border, building timber pallets, crates, cases and produce bins at volume, including one tonne, half tonne and quarter tonne bins for local growers. Colac is also home to CMTP’s 3D CAD design team, so much of our custom and engineered work starts here. For the region’s manufacturers, processors and primary producers, often overlooked by the big interstate suppliers, local manufacturing means lead times set by your operation, not by a freight schedule out of the city.

The site manufactures to ISO 9001 standards, the internationally recognised standard for quality management systems.

Our Story in Colac

About the Colac area

Colac sits in the Colac Otway Shire, in the Barwon Southwest region of Victoria. The shire covers 3,438 square kilometres, with Colac the main industrial, commercial and service centre at around 12,000 residents. The local economy is built on agriculture (dairy, beef, sheep, horticulture), manufacturing, timber, and a strong tourism layer driven by the Great Ocean Road and Apollo Bay. Apollo Bay alone swells from around 1,000 permanent residents to more than 15,000 over summer, which puts seasonal pressure on food, beverage, and accommodation supply chains across the shire.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's - CMTP Colac

Do you manufacture pallets in Colac?

Yes. CMTP manufactures timber pallets, export pallets and custom pallet solutions from its Colac facility. As CMTP’s head office, the site supports customers across western Victoria and beyond.

What types of pallets are available from your Colac site?

The Colac facility manufactures standard timber pallets, custom and engineered pallets, ISPM 15 certified export pallets, Wine and Food XP pallets, cases and crates, produce bins, and other specialised packaging solutions. The site is ISO 9001 and HACCP certified and can kiln dry.

Do you deliver pallets outside Colac?

Yes. The Colac site services western Victoria, the Surf Coast, the Great Ocean Road region, Geelong, Ballarat and the Melbourne corridor, with weekly interstate transport to all states.

Can CMTP design custom pallets for specific products?

Yes. CMTP’s 3D CAD design team is based at Colac, designing custom pallet solutions based on product dimensions, weight requirements, handling methods, and transport conditions.

Do your export pallets meet international requirements?

Yes. CMTP manufactures ISPM 15 certified export pallets that comply with international timber packaging requirements for export freight.

How quickly can I order pallets from CMTP Colac?

3-4 days is a typical lead time for standard CMTP products. Custom builds run longer depending on the design. Contact the Colac team for current availability, and call for express orders.

What pallet sizes can I order from CMTP Colac?

The Australian standard 1165 x 1165 pallet is the most common order, alongside Euro and US export footprints. Colac also builds to custom dimensions where a standard footprint doesn’t suit the product or the container. Tell the team the load, the handling equipment and the destination and they’ll spec it.

What's the difference between a timber pallet and an export pallet?

An export pallet is a timber pallet that has been heat treated and certified to ISPM 15, which is what lets it leave the country. Any solid timber packaging heading overseas has to meet it. If your freight stays in Australia a standard wooden pallet does the job. If it is going on a ship or a plane it needs to be an export pallet.

What's the difference between a case and a crate?

A crate is an open slatted timber container, a case is fully enclosed. Crates are lighter and cheaper for robust goods. Cases give more protection for anything fragile, dust or moisture sensitive, or high value. The Colac team will tell you which one suits the job.

Are your cases and crates suitable for export?

Yes. Cases and crates built for international freight are ISPM 15 certified, the same as export pallets. Heavy or oversize machinery is a common use, and those builds are engineered to the load rather than pulled off a shelf.

Do you manufacture produce bins at Colac?

Yes. Produce bins and bulk bins are a core part of the Colac order book. Wooden bins protect perishable goods and keep produce fresher for longer, and they’re a sustainable alternative to plastic. Bins are built to suit growers’ handling requirements, including one tonne, half tonne and quarter tonne capacities, and can be designed to your own specification where a standard bin doesn’t fit the operation.

Can produce bins be used for export?

Yes, provided they’re ISPM 15 certified. Any solid timber packaging leaving Australia has to meet ISPM 15, and that applies to produce bins and bulk bins the same way it applies to pallets. CMTP manufactures ISPM 15 certified timber packaging, so bins destined for international freight are treated and marked to comply. Tell the Colac team the destination market when you order, because some countries add their own requirements on top of ISPM 15.

Can CMTP design a pallet or crate for an unusual product?

Yes. CMTP runs a 3D CAD design capability based at the Colac head office, so Colac customers can have a pallet, case or crate engineered around the product rather than forcing the product onto a standard footprint.

What do you need from me to quote a custom build?

Product dimensions and weight, how it’s handled (forklift, pallet jack, crane), how it’s transported and where it’s going, and any compliance requirements such as ISPM 15 or food grade. The more of that you have up front, the faster the Colac team can come back with a spec and a price.
